Women's rounders in Altrincham, Thursday evenings at Stamford Park

One Hour a Week That’s Just for You: Women’s Rounders in Altrincham

Maybe you’ve just moved to Altrincham and don’t know many people yet. Maybe the gym has never been your thing and you’d like to try a different sport. Or maybe you’re a mum who’d love one evening a week where someone else does bath and bedtime.

Whichever one sounds like you, there’s a place for you at Altrincham All Rounders.

We’re a friendly women’s rounders team, and we play every Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30pm at Stamford Park. It costs £3 a session. You don’t need any experience and you don’t need to sign up. Just turn up.

Looking for a new sport that isn’t the gym?

Not everyone enjoys the treadmill. If you want to get active without counting reps or staring at a screen, rounders is a great place to start.

You’ll run, throw, catch and hit, all outdoors in the fresh air, and you’ll barely notice you’re exercising because you’ll be too busy laughing or trying to get round to fourth post. Most of us last played at school, and some of us had never played at all. Everyone picks it up quickly, and nobody minds if you miss the ball.

If you get the bug, we also have a team in the Manchester Women’s Rounders League. Playing in matches is completely optional, so you can stick to Thursday training and keep it relaxed.

New to Altrincham and want to make friends?

Making friends as an adult is hard, especially in a new area. Joining a team is one of the easiest ways to do it. You don’t have to make small talk with strangers. You just turn up, play, cheer each other on, and the conversation comes naturally.

After training, many of us head to the pub, and that’s often where the friendships really start. We also have socials throughout the year, so it’s about more than just rounders.

Whether you’ve moved here for work, family or a fresh start, you’ll get a warm welcome on a Thursday.

Mums: an hour that’s just for you

You know how it goes: tea, bath, stories, “one more glass of water”, and suddenly it’s 8pm and you haven’t had a minute to yourself.

Thursday night rounders is your excuse to hand over bedtime and get out of the house for an hour. You get fresh air, a bit of exercise, plenty of laughs and some grown-up conversation. There’s even the option of a drink afterwards.

It’s only an hour and it’s only £3, so it’s easy to fit in, and you’ll go home feeling better than when you left.

What to expect at your first session

  • When: Thursdays, 6:30 to 7:30pm
  • Where: Stamford Park, Altrincham, on the grassy field between the car park and Queen’s Road
  • Cost: £3 per session
  • Who: Women of all ages and abilities
  • What to wear: Trainers and something comfortable you can run around in
  • Sign-up: None needed, just come along

We’ll show you the basics of batting, bowling and fielding, and then we’ll play a game. Nobody expects you to be good on your first night, and nobody minds.

A quick tip: it’s worth messaging us before your first session. Now and then a league game moves training in the summer, and our winter venue (November to April) is still being confirmed. A quick message also means we’ll know to look out for you.

Questions we often get asked

Do I need to have played rounders before?
No. Lots of our members hadn’t picked up a bat since school, and some had never played at all.

I’m not very fit. Is that OK?
Yes. Sessions are relaxed and social. You can go at your own pace, and you’ll get fitter without noticing.

Can I come on my own?
Absolutely. Plenty of people come along on their own, and you won’t be on your own for long.

How much does it cost?
£3 per session. There’s no membership to sign up for before you try it.

Do I have to play in matches?
No. League games are optional. Lots of members just come to Thursday training.
